Formaldehyde-Free Base Materials Drive the Low-CarbonTransformation of the Building Sector

As the global construction industry accelerates its transition toward low-carbon and healthy development, MDI (Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate) adhesive, a high-performance formaldehyde-free binder, has achieved large-scale application in the building materials sector. Unlike conventional urea-formaldehyde resin adhesives, MDI adhesive contains no formaldehyde groups in its molecular structure and forms a stable cross-linked structure after curing. It avoids long-term formaldehyde emissions at the source, enabling wood-based panels, building insulation boards, structural composite panels and other products to consistently meet ENF, the highest environmental grade. It is widely used in residential renovation, commercial public buildings and ultra-low-energy buildings. (Source: China Daily Website)

Beyond its environmental strengths, MDI adhesive features outstanding physical properties including high bonding strength, water and moisture resistance, and deformation resistance, continuously expanding its application possibilities in building materials. For wood-based panels, MDI adhesive chemically reacts with wood fibers and straw fibers to form dense and firm bonding layers. The resulting panels resist boiling water and cracking, making them suitable for underfloor heating and humid environments. In the field of building energy conservation, MDI serves as a core raw material for polyurethane insulation materials. Insulation boards manufactured with MDI have low thermal conductivity, which effectively reduces heating and cooling energy consumption of buildings, and provides reliable low-carbon solutions for prefabricated buildings, external wall insulation and roof thermal insulation.

Industry experts state that the popularization of MDI adhesive is reshaping environmental standards and product logic within the building materials industry, driving the industrial chain to shift from end-of-pipe treatment to source-based carbon reduction. With the implementation of policies for green buildings and nearly zero-energy buildings, alongside growing consumer demand for healthy indoor air quality, MDI adhesive will achieve further penetration in markets for high-end home substrates, prefabricated components and energy-saving insulation materials, and keep supporting the high-quality and sustainable development of the building materials industry.
